Students at universities become mainly focused on "practical knowledge" that leads to high paid jobs. The values by which we guide our technological development and application become afterthoughts. We must wonder if technology now controls human life more than humans control technology.

Water bugs on the surface of life

We may skim the surface of life; like water bugs never going below the surface. Understanding is to “stand under”, to go below the surface.

We may skim the surface of life; like water bugs never going below the surface.  Understanding is to “stand under”, to go below the surface.

Life is lived only here-and-now.  The candle burns at the wick – where wax touches air.  The wax is the past, the air is the future.  The flame is the living present – the meeting point of past and future – the flame of life.

It is through this life (my life, your life, their lives) that everything is known.  This body is the temple of the soul. The relative and the absolute meet exactly in this life.  Here-and-now is the eye of the paradox.

On, or in? On love, or in love? On a discipline, or in it? For the grade, or for the knowledge? For the credential, or the identity? How long did in last? How deep did you go? Did you enter the flow of it? Did you own it entirely? Did you spend every waking hour on it for weeks? Did anything else matter? If it was long; deeper than the ocean floor; you didn't notice anything beyond it, the object of your focus; and you did it for knowledge, identity,...--you addressed your drivers, then you were deep. I spent far too much of my life as surface. I can look back and wish that I had gone deep, that I had found that all consuming passion, that I made something the all other than myself. I thought I had, but were they just surface as well? I do know that in 2000, I spent two weeks deep--in, not on. Now, I long to go deep again. To stay deep, instead of this Markovian, surface, adrift, survivalist, minimalist existance.

If you wish to go deep, you will. It's a matter of sustained focus (with many breaks).
